“To my knowledge, the first skateboard park ever built was "Surfer's World," which opened in the summer of 1966 in Anaheim, California. It wasn't until 1977 that Canada saw its first concrete park go into the ground in West Vancouver. So here we are 45 years later with one obvious thing staring us in the face. These things called skateparks are here to stay.

I have always been partial to the Seylynn Skatepark, probably because I was part of the design team and, at age 75, can still roll in here and feel comfortable. The park, which officially opened on October 7, 1978, is the oldest existing skateboard park in Canada and just reeks of history. From Tony Alva to Tony Hawk and every pro skater in between, including Rob "Sluggo" Boyce and Colin McKay, who made this their backyard. Through the 70s and early 80s, C.A.S.A. (The Canadian Amateur Skateboard Association) held Provincial and National Championships here. Then in the summer of 1986, top pro and amateur skaters from 16 countries descended on Seylynn as part of the EXPO 86 TransWORLD Skateboard Championships. If the world did not know about this secret place, you had better believe they did after that day.
